Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Rapisarda Industries is to close with the consequent loss of 109 jobs. The plant is located at Cernusco sul Naviglio, in the province of Milan, and it produces high-pressure pipes. Rapisarda Industries belongs to the Caterpillar group, which is the world's largest maker of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, and industrial gas turbines. At the beginning of November 2009, the trade unions, the company and the local authorities reached an agreement that provides for some measures intended to cushion the harmful effects on redundant workers. In particular, the agreement envisages the recourse to an extraordinary Wage Guarantee Fund scheme for one year, economic incentives for voluntary resignations, and the possibility to access to programmes of retraining and skills updating.
