European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
In March 2009 Nokia Siemens announced the closure of the research department located at Cassina de Pecchi, in the province of Milan, with the consequent loss of 600 employees. The company has around 1,300 employees in its main Italian sites, located at Cassina de Pecchi and Cinisello Balsamo, both in the province of Milan. The trade unions reacted to the company decision by going out on strike and demanding the involvement of national and local authorities. They are worried about the future of the Nokia Siemens Italian sites because, in the last two years, the workforce employed in Cinisello Balsamo and Cassina de Pecchi has been reduced to a half (from around 2,600 to around 1,300 employees), by means of economic incentives for voluntary resignations, early retirements, and business branches' conveyances. At the beginning of September 2009, the company has requested the recourse to the extraordinary Wage Guarantee Fund schemes for the workers employed in the research unit. The Ministry of Economic Development has planned some meetings with the company and the trade unions for the next months.
