Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On November 4, pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson announced a global restructuring plan that involves 7,000-8,000 job cuts worldwide. The plan is intended to strengthen the company's position and increase its operational efficiency. The company estimates that layoffs will affect six to seven percent of its global workforce, mostly managerial staff. Johnson & Johnson employees approximately 117,000 people at more than 250 manufacturing units in 57 countries. As of November 2009, there is no precise information about when and where the dismissals will occur.
