Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 7 September, Deutsche Post announced the intention to cut 560 jobs at its subsidiary DHL in response to the insolvency of German retailer Arcandor. 4,000 German DHL employees are working in logistic services for the Arcondor-daughters, Karstadt and Quelle. Deutsche Post argues that DHL Solutions has been strongly affected by a decline in orders. 560 DHL jobs shall be cut by the end of April 2010. 220 jobs will be shed at Holzwickede and at Unna (both Ruhr region), 320 at Oranienburg, Bücknitz and Groß-Gerau and an additional 20 jobs at Hamburg. According to FAZ, Deutsche Post has informed the United Services Union, ver.di, of the plans. There is no information on any agreement reached.
According to a 20 October 2009 announcement by DHL, the 560 jobs cuts are already gone.
