European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
Toshiba is ending television production at its Plymouth factory, resulting in 270 job losses. The manufacturing plant at Ernesettle, which has been producing TVs since the 1960s, is closing as production is moving to Poland, although about 50 staff will remain at the site for repairs and to advise the Polish team. The company blamed the decision to centralise production in Eastern Europe on a "fiercely competitive market". It means the end of mass TV manufacturing in the UK, a technology the country invented, and has been described as a "body blow" to Plymouth. Tim Jones, chairman of Devon and Cornwall Business Council, said "This is a trophy company for the city, a global company which has become part of the family of manufacturing companies in Plymouth...For every job that comes up there is a queue of vacancies, so not only do we lose a fantastic company, but all the skills of those employed there...We could lose another 150 jobs as a direct consequence to suppliers."
