Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Package delivery company UPS is to make 200 staff redundant by May 31, 2010, when it plans to close its Dublin call centre. It is understood that approximately 60 staff are to be offered alternative posts in other UPS sites in the Dublin area, but the remaining jobs will be phased out, commencing in October 2009. The centre is responsible for answering queries from UPS customers in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Ireland, parts of Switzerland, and UK. Significantly, the company has suggested that it found it difficult to find the required language skills in Ireland, which caused it to recruit foreign workers and relocate them to Ireland. High turnover of staff was also cited as a reason for high costs. The company has said it will be offering workers a redundancy package some way higher than the statutory entitlement.
