Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Austria-based Schoeller-Bleckmann Oilfield Equipment has laid off about 300 employees worldwide since the beginning of 2009, most of them at its plants in the USA, Austria and the UK. Restructuring has become inevitable since oilwell drilling activities have decreased worldwide due to the current global crisis. As a consequence, the demand for oilfield equipment has shrunk likewise. This was reported by the newspaper Der Standard on 19 August 2009.
