Early August witnessed commencement of the winding down of the Wirek coal mine (Kopalnia "Wirek") in Ruda Śląska, a process scheduled for completion in November 2011. The mine, a part of the Halemba-Wirek colliery complex, had been active for 200 years, and its coal deposits have now been depleted.
