Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Car manufacturer Nissan has announced that it is to create 350 jobs at its factory near Sunderland by producing batteries for electric cars. The plant secured the work after being in competition with other plants across Europe for the investment which may pave the way for future production of electric vehicles. Nissan have announced the production of the batteries as part of an alliance with the governments of the UK and Portugal. No details were given on when the new jobs would be created.
Nissan currently employs 4,200 workers at its Sunderland plant. In January 2009, the firm announced it would cut 1,200 jobs at the plant due to falling customer demand for new cars.
