On 14 July 2009, the technology provider EDS announced that it will cut 500 jobs in Germany. EDS is affiliated to Hewlett-Packard, which had initially stated its plans of cutting 839 jobs at EDS.
After negotiations with the German Metalworkers' Union only 500 jobs are to be cut at EDS. A transfer agency is to be set up and compensation payments are to be offered to implement the job reduction. This offer is valid until the end of September 2009.
Depending on how many employees take up the offer, dismissals due to operational reasons are possible. Such dismissals are limited to 300 jobs and cannot be implemented before September 2009. Locations in Essen, Cologne, Leuna and Ludwigsburg are to be closed. EDS employs around 3,500 employees in Germany.
