Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Manitowoc, a US lifting equipment provider, has announced that the group has decided to cut 539 of its 1,750 jobs in France. It is the second case of restructuring this year - in January, the group envisaged 358 job losses in France. Since the beginning of the year, the French sites have been operating at 20% of their capacity.
This new plan follows the one launched in January, which will lead to a total 560 job cuts out of 3,500 in Europe by the end of 2009. The downsizing measures will also affect plants in Italy, Germany and Slovakia. The company's recovery moves have had little impact so far and no major revival is expected before 2011.
