Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Pirelli Tyre, a manufacturer of tyres, has announced that 348 jobs will be lost in Turin, Italy. The job losses come after an agreement with the main sectoral trade unions on the reorganisation of its plants located at Turin. The agreement was based on the closure of two old plants and the subsequent creation of a new advanced site in Settimo Torinese, in the province of Turin. The new industrial site will employ 1,240 employees, while slightly fewer than 1,590 workers were employed in the two old plants, meaning that 348 jobs will be lost.
The new site will be operative in 2010. In the meantime, the employees will benefit from the extraordinary Wages Guarantee Fund scheme for industrial restructuring. All of the 1,240 employees should be employed in the new site within the 2011. Moreover, Pirelli Tyre will invest EUR 155 million in research and development programs.
