Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Portuguese textile company Mateus e Mendes, located in the industrial area of Castelo Branco, has closed, leading to the dismissal of 150 female workers. The company had already stopped production for the last two weeks, and the request for insolvency is currently taking place.
According to the textile trade union, the suspension of contracts until the decision of the creditors meeting would be the best solution, but the company has opted to make the dismissals.
The Portuguese authorities applied for aid from the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF).
