Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Toly Products Limited, a supplier of plastic packaging components for the cosmetics industry, plans to increase its workforce in Malta by 35. Currently it employs 350 employees and is investing €13 million on a new factory in Malta which will cover 5,500 sq.metres and will have several floors.
The CEO, Andy Gatesy said that the company also plans to invest €3.5 million on automation but will still increase its workforce by 10 percent as new products are added. The company laid off 84 wokers in October 2008 but has since received government assistance through Malta Enterprise in order save further job cuts and help with the new investment.
