Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
It has been announced that 100 redundancies are to occur at Meadow Meats, a meat-processing plant in County Laois in the Irish Midlands region. The redundancies are due to a decision by parent Dawn Meats Group to merge part of its operations with another factory in County Waterford. The comapny has said that it will offer new positions in Waterford, to those laid off in Laois, but the union has suggested that few of the existing staff will be able to transfer to take up the positions. Waterford is some distance from Laois. At present, 150 staff work at Meadow Meats. The plant's boning facility is to be closed by the end of August. However, cattle slaughtering at the plant will continue and 50 people who currently work in the abattoir will remain in employment.
