Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Paper manufacturer Smurfit Kappa is to make 140 people redundant out of its 173-strong workforce at its paper converting plant in County Cork. It was reported in the Irish Times that the decision is due to the major downturn in Irish manufacturing industry which has affected Smurfit Kappa's business because of a substantial reduction in volume. The redundancies are expected to come into effect after the end of negotiations with employees and their representatives, the company has stated. Thirty jobs are to be retained to serve local clients.
