Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Contact lenses manufacturer Bausch & Lomb is looking for 120 voluntary redundancies at its Waterford plant. Bausch wants to cut its 1,200 strong labour force by 10 per cent to enhance the plant's competitiveness. The company produces contact lenses and other eye care related pharmaceutical products. As well as voluntary redundancies, Bausch wants to secure substantial cost reductions; although it is reported in the Irish Times that the company is not proposing wage cuts or short-time working for remaining staff.
