Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Outokumpu, a stainless steel company, has given notice to 450 employees in Sweden. Their aim is to achieve cost savings through personnel reductions and general cost saving programs. In Avesta 262 employees were given notice, in Degerfors 97 employees, at the unit Nyby in the municipality of Torshälla 57 were given notice and at the unit Kloster in the municipality of Hedemora, 34 employees were given notice.
Outokumpu have also negotiated reduced costs with personnel representatives in the head office of each country it operates in. The negotiations are held according to local legislation in each country and may lead to permanent or temporary layoffs. The company Outokumpu operates in some 30 countries and employs 8 000 people.
