Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
NEC Computers, a manufacturer of personal and notebook computers, has announced the lay off of 387 employees in France. 53 jobs will be cut at the head office in Puteaux and 334 (out of 362) at the production site in Angers. The company plans to end its manufacturing activities in Europe while maintenance and support services wil be kept in operation. The cuts are blamed on sharp decline in sales and increasing competition and are part of the company's strategic cost-saving plan, which involves 20,000 job cuts worldwide.
