FS Group, the state-owned Italian Railway company, is to create 900 new jobs by the end of 2009. On 16 May 2009, the company and the most part of the main sectoral trade unions reached an agreement on the reorganisation of many activities of the group. In particular, the agreement envisages 900 new jobs by the end of 2009, new investments in maintenance area, the reorganisation of railways, the reduction to one engine-driver for every train and new investments on the 'redundancy fund' for redundant personnel in the group. The agreement was not signed by the ORSA (Trasporti dell'Organizzazione Sindacati Autonomi e di Base), an autonomous rank-and-file union. The FS group has around 87,000 employees. The main companies making up FS Group are Rfi, a company for infrastructure management, and Trenitalia, a company for the management of railway services.
