Airport management company Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) has announced that it will cut 400 jobs at Cork, Shannon and Dublin airports. The redundancies are attributable to cost pressures as the DAA intends to deal with deficits in its finances.
DAA has been discussing cost-savings with unions. Unions were informed by management that the cost savings would be secured through 400 redundancies, career breaks, reduced hours, changes in terms and conditions and wage freezes. In terms of the redundancies, management is looking for voluntary redundancies and non-renewal of contracts. Compulsory redundancies, as well as pay cuts, were not being ruled out, however. The DAA has not issued a definitive timeframe for the restructuring or indicated which of the airports will be affected most. Unions accused the company of issuing a fait accompli, claiming that the decisions appeared to have already been made by management without prior consultation. Unions are seeking the retention of as many jobs as possible was key and are opposed to cuts in core pay.
