Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 24 April 2009, Toshiba, the Japanese electronics group, announced that it is ending production of television sets at its factory in Plymouth, England (by late August 2009) and that these operations will be taken over by a new factory in Poland. 270 workers out of the 320 now employed in Plymouth will lose their jobs; the same number of staff will be hired at the new Polish plant, whose location is still unknown.
