Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Gabor Shoes is to dismiss 250 out of 400 employees at its production site in Spittal, Carinthia. This information was released by Leopold Ebner, the CEO of the Spittal site, on 25 April 2009.
Serial production of shoes at the Spittal plant will be ceased by the end of August 2009, when the dismissals will come into effect. The remaining 150 staff will be engaged in manufacturing of samples only.
The Austrian site is a subsidiary of the German shoe manufacturer Gabor headquartered in Rosenheim, where the restructuring decision affecting the Austrian plant was taken. Mr Ebner blamed the planned redundancies on cutbacks in orders.
