Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The company Aleris, that produces Aluminium, announced its intention to cut 510 jobs on its site of Duffel (Antwerp). The production of aluminium is severely concerned by the slowdown of the automobile industry as well as the metal industry. Aleris experienced a production decrease of 50% since December 2008.
In April, management has announced to cut 770 jobs. The announcement was a complete shock for the trade unions, which were trying to propose alternatives to the management. According to the latter, it was envisaged to reduce the number from 770 jobs concerned to 520 through measures of temporary unemployment. In May 2009, trade union representatives and management agreed to dismiss 510 employees only.
