Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
FM Logistic, a French logistics company, is to cut 483 jobs in Woippy by May 2010. The redundancies will start in June 2009. This decision follows that of the company's principal client, Hewlett-Packard, to move its packaging activities to Malaysia. In April, five members of the company's management were detained briefly by workers unhappy at the job cuts and the terms of severance on offer. Thereafter, negotiations with unions led to improved redundancy terms which 90% of the unit's workers have now accepted.
