Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Carinox, a site of ArcelorMittal, located in the region of Charleroi, is about to cut 80 jobs and reassign another 70 employees. This restructuring is partly linked to the temporary stoppage of the stripping activities of the site of 'decaperie de la Praye' (see fact sheet n°13281). The activities should then be decreased and cause a change in work organisation: three teams instead of four and five working days instead of seven. No compulsory dismissals are forecast: 70 workers will be reassigned to other sites while 80 may leave on early retirement (prepension). ArcelorMittal is facing a severe decrease of demand and a lack of capital. This decision could be very damaging to the possibilities of survival of the metal industry in the region of Charleroi.
