Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 17 March 2009, Ahlers - a German manufacturer of men's clothing - announced that it would cut 770 jobs out of 2,800 worldwide. In Germany, 99 employees are affected out of a total of 730. However, most of the jobs will be lost at the company's sites in Poland. At the end of March 2009, two Polish production sites are to be closed down affecting 650 jobs. In additon, another 20 jobs will be reduced at another Polish site. Due to rising wage costs, the production is to be relocated to Sri Lanka.
