Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Bekaert textiles, manufacturer of mattress cover materials, located in Waregem, Flanders, is about to cut 100 jobs. The company has decided to stop all production activities in Belgium and transfer the production to the Czech Republic and Turkey. The company is currently facing overcapacity issues in Europe. Among the workers concerned, 80 blue-collar workers and 20 white-collar workers will lose their jobs. The central administration will remain in Waregem with 85 employees. For more information on this case, see EIRO report.
The Belgian authorities applied for aid from the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF).
