Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
In March 2009, Steelite, a pottery manufacturer which employs 600 people in Stoke-on-Trent, announced the reduction of 15% of its workforce (i.e. 90 jobs) within the next 30 days. On 7th April 2009, Steelite announced that 79, rather than 90, of its workers atĀ its site in Stoke-on-Trent will be made redundant. As of April 2009 there is no information on when the job losses will be implemented by. The company is reducing its staffing levels as it is attempting to cut its costs.
