Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
A US-owned medical devices manufacturng company is to make approximately 100 staff redundant at its plant in Fermoy, north Cork. Sanmina-SCI currently employs around 400 people in Fermoy. The company manufactures a variety of products, including monitors for respirators and ventilators, as well as MRI equipment. It has been reported that most staff to be made redundant on employed on temporary contracts. The company has attributed the job losses to the cessation/non-renewal of manufacturing contracts.
