Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
DAF Trucks, a manufacture of trailers, is about to cut 873 jobs in its plant of Westerlo, Flanders. DAF Trucks had already not reconducted the employment contract of 750 temporary workers in November but this time the restructucturing process will apply to workers on an open-ended contract: 800 blue-collars and 73 white-collars. The management reported that the decision was made as a result of the overall financial crisis which led to a decrease in the production of trailers from 240 to 100 units a day. Trade unions were taken by surprise by this decision as they were expecting instead that temporary unemployment measures would be taken.
