Eurallumina, a refinery that produces aluminium, is to close with the consequent loss of 450 jobs. Eurallumina is located at the Portovesme industrial area, in the province of Cagliari. Eurallumina belongs to the Russian company Rusal, the world's largest producer of aluminium and alumina. Rusal has around 90,000 employees worldwide. In order to tackle the global economic downturn and the consequent fall of the aluminium's demand, the group has recently announced a comprehensive programme to increase its efficiency. The plan includes the reduction of about 11% of the total production of aluminium.
