Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Ford is to cut 850 jobs across the UK. The job losses are blamed on falling demand for commercial vans and they will affect workers in Southampton (500 staff), Essex, Northamptonshire, Merseyside and south Wales. The announced redundancies follow the company's recent decision to introduce pay cuts in order to maintain jobs. UNITE and GMB unions accused Ford of intending to use the pay cuts for redundancy compensation and did not rule out a ballot for industrial action unless the company reconsidered its plans. The losses will occur by May 2009.
