Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Danish windows manufacturer, Rationel Vinduer, has been through two rounds of lay-offs due to a declining market in mainly England and Ireland. The first came in September 2008 in Struer, Jutland, where 70 were dismissed. The second already followed end of November when the factory in Struer was closed and further 110 were made redundant. The management foresee more problems in 2009. Therefore it has with the acceptance of the employees introduced work-sharing for a period of max 13 weeks. It means that the employees work one week and receive unemployment benefit the next. During the term of notice the efforts of the management, the trade union and the local job centre have succeeded in finding jobs for 40 employees. There are 467 employees left in Sdr. Felding.
