Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Corus, a steel producer, is to cut 2,500 jobs across the UK. The cuts are blamed on falling demand and amount to about 10% of the company's UK workforce. 1,100 of the cuts will occur in company operations in Wales and the rest in different UK sites including 713 in Rotherham, 108 in West Midlands, 93 in Scunthorpe, 61 in Wolverhampton and 80 in Scotland. The company hopes to implement the job losses through voluntary redundancies and has also asked for financial aid from the UK Government. As of January 2009, there is no information o when the job cuts will occur.
