Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Perkins Engines, a manufacturer of diesel engines, is to cut 450 jobs at its site in Peterborough. The cuts were blamed on the current economic conditions and will affect 100 office staff and 350 hourly-paid employees. Most of the job losses will be compulsory redundancies but the company also announced a voluntary severance scheme for its hourly-paid employees. As of 27 January 2009 there is no information on when the job losses will occur.
