Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Due to the deteriorating market situation, the Ahlsell Group is to cut 150 jobs in Norway as part of a large restructuring resulting in the loss of 500 jobs worldwide. Out of the 150 redundant workers, 85 are permanent employees and the remainder are temporary agency workers and employees on project work contract.
On 5th of February 2009, one of the shop stewards in Ahlsell told the union magazine HK-Nytt that after negotiations with the unions 60-70 employees had received dismissal notices, 20-30 had decided to take early retirement pension (AFP), while the rest would leave with "other kinds of pension arrangements". The final total number was not stated.
Ahlsell is one of Norway’s largest full-range wholesalers, with products for water supply, heating, sanitation and sewage applications, industrial applications, electrical installation, refrigeration and oil and gas installation, as well as tools and work clothes. The company has approximately 60 branches throughout the country.
