Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Snaige, the manufacturer of refrigerators, intends to dismiss 300 employees in Alytus by the end of March 2009. The company has already dismissed 300 people at the end of 2008. At present 1,100 people are employed in the company. The main cause for dismissals is a slowing down of the sales in Russia and Ukraine, whereto the company exports up to 50% of its products. According to the latest news, 60 more people were dismissed from the company on 11 February, 2009. Approximately one third of the administration staff (which involved 200 people) lost their jobs in Snaige.
The Lithuanian authorities applied for aid from the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) and it is currently being implemented.
