Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Vion, a manufacturer of food products, is to cut 820 jobs across the UK. 470 jobs will be lost at its Haverhill site in Suffolk, 200 at its Malton site in North Yorkshire and 150 at its Cambuslang site in Lanarkshire. The cuts were blamed on the over-capacity in the UK meat processing sector and the vulnerability of the food supply chain companies to the demands of the big supermarkets. The company committed to enter into consultation with the employees and the unions. As of 20 January 2009 there is no information on when the job losses will occur.
