Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Irish-owned supermarket chain Superquinn, which specialises in the sale of food and beverages, has announced 400 redudancies. Of this, the closure of its Dundalk store near the Northern Ireland border will result in 67 redundancies, with the remaining redundancies applying across the rest of its 24 stores countrywide. The company has partly attributed the job losses to the impact of cross-border shopping - Irish people are increasingly shopping in Northern Ireland because of the lower cost of goods and the current euro/sterling exchange rate. The company is also asking staff to accept more flexible working terms to help avoid further job losses. Superquinn employs 3,300 workers in its 24 stores throughout Ireland.
