Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Waterford Wedgwood, a manufacturer of china and glass, has made 367 redundancies and on 13 May 2009 announced plans to cut a further 225 jobs. The firm, which went into administration early in January 2009 employs 1,868 people in the UK and will make most of the cuts at its site in Barlaston, near Stoke-on-Trent. The cuts are blamed on the recession while the company has entered into a 90-day consultation period with the employees.
