Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Nissan, a car manufacturer, has announced that it is to cut 1,200 jobs from its site at Sunderland. The company currently employs 5000 people at the site, with 3800 working in manufacturing. 400 temporary manufacturing workers will lose their jobs, coupled with 800 permanent manufacturing staff. The company attributed the cuts to the reduction in demand for new cars. As of 11 January 2009 the company has not announced when these jobs will be lost.
