Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Carrera Optyl, a manufacturer of plastic frames for corrective lenses and sunglasses, will have cut 484 jobs by the end of 2009.
The company is in the majority ownership of Safilo (Italy). It is located in Ormož in north-eastern Slovenia and employed 1,434 workers before March 2009.
After dismissing 147 workers in April and another 137 workers in the period between April and September, the company now employs 1150 people.
Due to further decline in orders and no perspective for an improvement, the company will dismiss another 200 people by the end of 2009 bringing job losses to 484. In Moreover, the management has announced possible further dismissals of 150 employees.
