Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 5 December 2008, the Global Engineering Alliance (GEA) announced to close down its affiliate Ruhr-Zink in Datteln by the end of 2008. Ruhr-Zink produces zinc and employs 235 employees who are affected by the closure. A social plan was set up to regulate the closure. A company spokesperson stated that Ruhr-Zink was suffering losses for several years due to the low zinc prices and rising energy costs. Ruhr-Zink’s affiliate MG Rohstoffhandel headquartered in Frankfurt is not affected by the closure. It will operate independently in future.
