Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Hawick Knitware, a Scottish textile company, is to cut 39 jobs at its Borders site. The company blamed the rise in enegy costs, the impact of the national minimum wage and the slowdown in consumer spending for the job losses. The announcement of the cuts followed a 30-day consultation period with the unions. According to the company, the cuts were necessary in order to safeguard the jobs of the remaining 222 employees of the site. As of November 2008 there is no information on when the job losses will be implemented by.
