Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 26 March 2009, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen, the German manufacturer of printing machines, announced that it is to cut 3,000 out of 13,000 jobs in Germany. In October 2008, the company had already stated to cut 2,000 jobs. However, due to the lasting decline in orders more job cuts were considered necessary.
Exact information on which sites will be affected by job cuts are not available (as of March 2009). In October 2008, the company had named the following sites: Heidelberg-Wiesloch (1,400 cuts) and Amstetten (350 cuts).
The job losses are part of a larger restructuring programme involving a total of 5,000 job cuts worldwide. Although there is a collective agreement in place which excludes direct dismissals until the end of 2012, the company intends to enter into talks with trade union in order to renegotiate this agreement.
