Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
In 2008, the Japanese car maker Nissan announced the reduction of 1,680 jobs at its plants in Montcada and Barcelona due to the sharp drop in car sales and the global economic slowdown. After protests, the company agreed to implement reduced working hours and temporary closures in place of the redundancies while negotiating with unions. While the company still insists that it has over 1,400 surplus workers, only 226 have opted for voluntary redundancy to date. Early retirement options are also being explored.
Additional information on negotiations between the management and unions and further workforce cuts in the car industry is available on the European Industrial Relations Observatory (EIRO).
