Description
Miroglio, an important Italian group operating in textile sector, is to close its plant at Ginosa - in the province of Taranto (Puglia) - with the loss of 234 jobs. The Ginosa plant produces artificial and synthetic articles ranging from silk and cotton to wool and elastic. The company will ask to the government for recourse to the “extraordinary” Wages Guarantee Fund – a ‘social shock absorber’ that intervenes in cases of restructuring, reorganisation, closure, change of activity or economic difficulties. The scheme should last for two years (November 2008 – November 2010).
The trade unions reacted to the company’s decision by organising several industrial actions. Moreover, they are involving the local and national authorities in order to find some entrepreneurs who are interested in buying the plant. Miroglio group’s economic activities are divided in three divisions: textile, garments and spinning. It has around 16 brands and it is headquartered in Piedmont.
