Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Jaguar Land Rover, a manufacturer of motor vehicles, is to cut about 600 jobs in the UK. These cost-cutting measures will be carried out by means of voluntary redundancies. The company’s voluntary redundancy scheme commenced in October 2008 with the announcement of 198 job losses.
Jaguar justified the additional 300 to 400 job cuts on the grounds of falling demand due to the economic turmoil. The job losses will involve hourly-paid employees in manufacturing and product development and to salaried employees to manufacturing only. The company has offered a lump-sum payment of nine months pay and full pension for employees aged 60 and over. The announced extension of the voluntary redundancy scheme followed consultation with employees and union representatives. As of November 2008 there is no information on when the voluntary redundancy scheme will take effect.
