Description

Swedish white collar union Unionen has announced the loss of 227 jobs between now and 2012. Unionen was formed by the trade unions HTF and Sif on 1 January 2008 and is Sweden’s largest trade union in the private labour market and the largest white-collar union in the world. They have approximately 500,000 members. Unionen has members in everything from major international companies to small family companies. Unionen made plans for restructuring within their entire organisation in August 2008. The restructuring plan will mainly concern the head quarters in Stockholm where numbers will be cut by 40%. The ambition is to avoid letting employees go and to keep as many as possible within the organisation. The reason for the restructuring is to be more useful for their members and to increase the proximity to the members. Therefore there will be a focus on decreasing the workforce in the headquarters, according to Unionen. Some employees will be offered redundancy payment or financial support for higher education. There is no set time limit for the restructuring, however Unionen expects all measures to be taken before 2012.
